Women Reinventing Mid Life Interview

Women reinventing mid life interview

Interview by Deb Johnstone – Women Reinventing Mid Life

I was interviewed by Deb Johnstone’s Women Reinventing Mid Life Channel.

At this interview, I shared my story how I reinvented my mid life.  I have changed my career many times and I have started my photography journey after 50.  It is never be too late to start something new, I believe. Hope my story inspires others who wants to start something new but feels too late to start.  All things I have done in the past now helped me for my photography business now.

I have spoken about the power of photography which I saw from my mother and my client who participated 50 over 50 project.  I realised that I can empowering others and help others gaining confidence in themselves by showing their beauty through my photography.  And at the same time, I empowered and gain confidence in myself from the feedback that I receive.

I find public speaking challenging.  Having an interview in English for a half hour is out of my comfort zone.  Deb was very easy to talk to and her nature made me relaxed.  Even though my English is not great, I am glad that I did it.

I am so grateful for this opportunity to be interviewed by Deb.  I have not met her in person yet. I am looking forward to seeing her in person in the future and capturing her.  Thank you so much, Deb.

I connected with Deb through my wonderful friend, Moana Robinson. I also like to share this interview by Moana – Take a MoMent interview about my 50 over 50 project in my previous studio in Waterford 3 years ago.

Moana Robinson in Feminessence Magazine

Feminessence Magazine

I took the photos of Moana Robinson – a personal stylist, image consultant and life coach of B Styled for Life for her feature in the first edition of Feminessence magazine by Shar Moore.

Feminessence magazine asked Moana to supply the photos of her working and preferably pink background.  We decided to do with white background and added some colours including pink on the rack. She holded her colour swatch with all outfits which are in her colours as a prop. We took photos with horizontal for article and vertical for the ad.

We took photos in different outfits for her business page as well.

On that day, we took photos of her and her fur baby Teddy James, Cavoodle in the studio and also at the beach.   It was fun day.

Moana submitted the photo of her at 60th birthday party which I also have taken photo of her.

Congratulations to Moana for being featured in the beautiful magazine, Feminessence and thank you so much for choosing me as your photographer.  This magazine is so beautiful to look at it and there are many resources in the magazine.   Get your copy at News agencies or order online. https://feminessence.com.au/

The photos that I took on the international magazine cover!

Bec McMillan, Crystal jewellery designer of Luminous Crystal.

Her Crystal Jewellery brand Luminous Crystal was birthed in honour of her little boy Jayce Michael McMillan.

Bec was featured in an international fashion magazine, called GMARO and I took her photos for the cover and her features.

Bec brought outfits – inner tops and jackets. I suggested just having jacket only for edgy look and we both love the outcomes.

Personal Branding, Headshots Gold Coast

Sumiko Eyears has helped me immensely with a landing page for my website.  Sumi used all her creative skills to create a landing page for me for a Mothers Day Special. She also created some Facebook and Instagram advertisements including a video which was absolutely gorgeous. In the bundle of assets that she created for this special was also a Thank You page which added a personal touch when someone purchased one of my book packages. I always like to have the personal touch for my customers and this is why I chose Sumiko to do this work. She is easy to worth with and captures the essence of your business personality. Having the skills as a photographer, graphic designer and web designer Sumi knows how everything is going to look when it is all put together. Thank you Sumi for making business so much easier.

The Portrait Masters is an international award and accreditation program, explicitly for portrait photographers of all genres, is a recognition of ‘high professional standard’, not something that awards merit only.  12 judges all over the world judged submitted images based on criterias such as expression and connection, styling, composition, posing, lighting, overall technique and presentation, post production, focus and storytelling.

I have awarded all 11 submitted images and I am very happy and grateful with the results that I have achieved.

50 over 50 project Exhibition October 2019

50 over 50 project exhibition 2019

Sumico Photography’s 50 over 50 project Exhibition

Photographic exhibition showcases the beauty of older women

A photographic exhibition of 50 over 50 project by Sumico Photography demonstrated that beauty doesn’t diminish with age. The 50 over 50 Project Exhibition held at Able Gallery, 27 Coral Street Loganlea in October 2019.

Logan resident professional photographer, I – Sumiko Eyears started her photography business after turning 50 and wanted to create a project to shine the light on the character, wisdom and spirit of older women.

I think; “Women as they age can become more critical of how they look”  “We focus on the parts of our body that have changed, that we don’t like, rather than on the beauty that radiates from within.”

The aim of the project entitled 50 over 50 was to photograph 50 women over the age of 50 culminating in an exhibition. I was pleasantly surprised by the flood of applications I received.

I had women aged from early 50’s to well into their 80’s want to take part.

Once the project began I realised the women’s transformations were more than skin deep. Starting with an interview, followed by professional makeup and hair styling, then I led each woman through a photo shoot with various wardrobe changes.

“Throughout the session, women started opening up and I was amazed by their stories.”

One woman shared of her life without children and how that has shaped her.  Another had undergone heart surgery and asked Sumiko to photograph her scars. A 63 year woman and her 83 year old mother flew from NSW to take part while one holiday maker from NZ decided to join the project to celebrate her 50th birthday.

The exhibition included women who have overcome illness and adversity, others who run successful businesses and some who took it on as a challenge.

“One participant was lacking in confidence heading into the shoot. Afterwards she said she felt completely empowered and that for the first time in her life, she was proud of herself and her achievements.”

This project was supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support arts and culture in regional Queensland.

This project was also supported by the Regional Arts Services Network (RASN) an initiative of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

I had an interview by ABC Radio, the project was featured in Y Mag, Logan City Magazine, Logan Albert River Newspaper, Courier Mail online.  At the Gallery Opening,  $1,365 funds raised for National Breast Cancer.

I am so grateful all the support that I received from my family, friends, participants, their families, friends and supporters.

I especially thankful to Arcadia who is my editor and supported me from starting this project.  Chelsi from Logan City council helped me to submit the application forms for RADF. BEMAC and Grace who helped me to submit the RASN fund. Jo Devin who helped me to put the exhibition together. Logan Arts Association for the venue especially to the coordinator, Kristy.  The wonderful guest speakers on the opening day – Shannon Fentiman MP, Michael from Logan Art Gallery, Di from Logan Arts Association, my clients and speakers, Rhonda, Kerry, Patricia and Johnene.  My volunteers on the day, Arcadia, Moana, Tracey, Tina, Keiko, Yumiko, Yumi, Kasumi and Shaun.

Thank you to my wonderful husband who helped me setting up the exhibition and always support what I do, and my son Leon.

This project was my journey.  I started planning this project in January 2018, launched it July 2018, completed the first exhibition October 2019.

My journey continues. I started Chapter 2. I will continue Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5…. and keep sharing beautiful women’s portrait and their stories.

I am so grateful to you all.

Portrait of Bella, A Puppy Farm Survivor and Her Family

Glamour Portrait with Pet

I love animals and I do care about animal’s welfare. I have a 13 year old dog and a 3 year old dog.

I take our dogs for walk everyday since my 13 year old dog was a puppy.  When I walked neighbourhood, I see some other dog owners  walking with their dogs.  I have seen Marie and her Golden Retriever, Bella walking last 10 years.  We sometimes had a brief conversation with Marie when we saw Marie and Bella at our afternoon walk. From our conversation, I knew Bella has had multiple health issues and cost Marie fortune.  I thought that Bella was a lucky dog to have such a loving human mother like Marie.

When I became to be a photographer, I wanted to take photographs of Marie and Bella.  I knew that Bella is getting older and Marie loved her so much. I asked her if she is interested in a portrait session with me and she said yes.
At pre consultation, I found out more detailed story about Bella and I met Marie’s daughter Melissa who is a hair and makeup artist.  Melissa did Marie’s hair and makeup. (Melissa’s Hair and Makeup Facebook page)

Marie found out where Bella was born at a puppy farm, and she wants to share the story about Bella and wishing to stop Puppy Farms.

Bella, a Puppy Farm Survivor and Her Family Portrait from Sumico Photography on Vimeo.

BELLA’S STORY

Bella was born on the 19th July 2008 in NSW in a puppy farm. Her mother was not even 12 mths old as she gave birth to her first litter she was born in a shed in the cold, the litter was taken from the mother from quite a young age as far as we know as she was only 9 weeks old when we purchased her from a Pet Store ( at this stage I was unaware that if I purchased a puppy from a pet store that they were all from puppy farms). Bella was on-sold from the original puppy farmer to another puppy farmer at goodness knows what age she was then sent on to Queensland to a pet store where she and 3 others from her litter were placed in the shop window ( I cringe at the thought of all of that )
We fell in love with the last puppy alone in the window with her back to the window she looked sad I HAD to take her home with me I just could not leave her there all alone we took her home with us on the 21st September 2008. She was still under age to be away from her mother unbeknownst to me! she seemed very timid that day I guess she didn’t know where she was.

Bella suffered some kind of weird seizure the next day we didn’t understand what that was she recovered with no further issues, until a year later she began to limp. After x rays, we were told she had very bad hip dysplasia and began medication to help. A couple of years later she was to undergo crutiot ligament operations, first one back leg then 3 months later the other back leg. We got her on good supplements to help with any pain and she has recovered quite well which I believe to be the supplement she is on helping her immensely.

Last year we were to discover that she has glaucoma in both eyes and had to have an inoculation ( removal of one eye) due to the pain being so severe and she had gone blind in that eye. There is no cure for glaucoma, we are currently administering medication to the remaining eye every 8 hours round the clock we can not miss any of the drops or she would go blind within an hour or so.

There have been numerous health issues with Bella stomach ( she has pancreatitis and on vet prescription diet ) skin, ears perhaps too many visits to the vet to mention .
Bella is our beautiful girl who has brought so much sunshine into our family we would not be without her regardless of the cost of operations and medical bills however I urge everyone to NOT SUPPORT PUPPY FARMS please do not ever buy a puppy from pet stores. Doing so, you are lining the pockets horrid puppy farmers who treat the dogs as puppy machines. They have no regard for their life, they are kept in absolute horrid conditions, chained up in the cold never feeling free or love cold dirty conditions to horrible to explain.

I believe Bella’s health issues throughout her life have all come down to bad breeding, bad conditions, poor health of the mother /father, bad circumstances of being born on a puppy farm.

– Marie

Bella is the face of a campaign being run by the Animal Justice Party NSW (AJP NSW). Members of the AJP NSW have been fighting alongside Bella’s family for nearly a decade for justice for Bella and many puppies and dogs, like Bella. This AJP NSW campaign coincides with the introduction of a NSW Puppy Factory bill by the Animal Justice Party, Member of the NSW Legislative Council, Mark Pearson.

Funds raised will go towards promoting this important campaign to ensure better outcomes for all puppies and dogs caught up in the Puppy Factory trade. If anyone wishes to donate to go to the animal justice party NSW, here is their link http://nsw.animaljusticeparty.org/
